Many years ago when I was much younger and worked for a prominent San Francisco AV company, I worked on a job for one of our repeat accounts, Phil Schwenk, owner of PS Communications (http://www.pscommunications.com/index.html). I remember the job clearly, not because of the gig's particulars per se, because it was the second job of Phil's that I was called in on. It seemed to me at the time that some of my colleagues had made careless operator errors on his gigs before or conducted themselves poorly in front of clients, and they were not asked back, but somehow I had managed to keep a clean sheet. I can't say if Phil had requested me back or if it was a coincidence of scheduling but I felt good to be back on his team. Something else had occurred to me. You see, Phil was perceived as some to be 'stern', some even said 'frosty'. In truth Phil just required a very high standard. He did not call for anything necessarily ground breaking in terms of technology but he did expect all inventory on his shows to be in perfect condition and all operations to be executed flawlessly. Keeping a clean sheet somehow meant I had done a good job. Phil's standards were high and I had been appreciated for maintaining those standards. In some way his standards became my standards from that point forward.
I continue to make that effort on all my own shows and many years later, as a freelance operator and producer, Phil and his team still look to me for support. It has been a privilege to keep supporting PSComm.
October 2014 PSComm produce another major event for Brocade a major provider of network solutions around the globe. I am again part of the team.
